Obama congratulates Hatoyama on election victory in Japan

President Barack Obama on Wednesday congratulated Yukio Hatoyama on the victory by his Democratic Party of Japan in last week's election, the White House said in a statement, CNN reported.

Obama spoke to Hatoyama, who is poised to become Japan's next prime minister, about working together on the global economic recovery, combating climate change, preventing North Korea from developing nuclear weapons and other issues, the statement said.

Obama said he looked forward to seeing Hatoyama at the U.N. General Assembly in New York and the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, later this month, according to the statement.
