Azerbaijan's Judicial and Legal Council held a meeting this week.
The meeting noted that important steps have been take this year to create new courts -- heinous crimes courts were established in four regions and administrative and economic courts were created in seven regions. Work has also been done to improve the military court system and the number of judges in the country has doubled.
In addition, judges are now elected after taking courses and multilevel exams - a progressive method used throughout Europe. A total of235 judges have been elected and 78 lawyers have been trained via this system in recent years. They were appointed to various judicial positions. These judges makeup 50 percent of the country's judiciary corps and 80 percent of its judges in Baku districts .
The meeting also discussed work carried out in connection with the upcoming launch of new regional heinous crimes courts and administrative and economic courts in January 2011.
