Turkey toughens penalties for traffic rules violations

Turkey increases fines for traffic rules violations, Anadolu news agency said on Nov. 18, citing the country's finance ministry.

According to the agency, the fines will triple starting from the new year. The drivers without a license will be fined 462 Turkish liras (approx. $228), the agency said.

The report also said the drivers who do not have relevant documents on them, will be fined 172 liras (approx. $85).

Earlier it was reported that the traffic police of Turkey will start checking drivers for drug use along with the alcohol test. To this end, Turkey imported from Germany a batch of electronic devices that determine the degree of the driver's intoxication and also the kind of drugs.

In case if the driver's narcotic intoxication is revealed he will face deprivation of rights to drive for a period of five years and a fine up to 3,600 Turkish liras (approx. $1,779).

It was reported that traffic police began checking drivers for drug use from Aug. 21 this year.
