Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 3

By Ilhame Isabalayeva - Trend:

A group of people tried to commit a terror act in Baku's Nardaran under the guise of religion - a believer can't take in hands a grenade or a submachine gun, said Siyavush Novruzov, chairman of Azerbaijani parliament's committee for public associations and religious organizations.

"In all the speeches, the head of state, as well as the sheikhulislam underscore that Islam should not be linked to terrorism," Novruzov said Dec. 3.

"Islam prohibits terror, this is said in Koran," he added.

Earlier, on Nov. 26, five members of a criminal group, operating under the guise of religion, were killed during a police operation in the township of Nardaran, some 25 km northeast of Baku. Two police officers were also killed in the standoff.

Fourteen members of the criminal group were arrested along with the group's ringleader Taleh Baghirov.

Azerbaijani Prosecutor General's Office has initiated criminal cases against those detained.
