Information about Protest Action by Nota Bene Newspaper Employee not Confirmed

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr.K.Zarbaliyeva / The Freedom and Security of Reporters Institute of Azerbaijan reported on 23 July that Faramaz Novruzoglu Allahverdiyev, an employee of the newspaper Nota Bene protested against his unfair arrest by sewing up his mouth and announcing a hunger strike.

Novruzoglu noted that he would leave Azerbaijan. Novruzoglu wanted to meet with diplomats of the Israeli Embassy in Azerbaijan.

Ershad Mammadov, chief of reformatory in the village of Kizildash, denied the information about the hunger strike held by the employee of the newspaper Nota bene. Novruzoglu was charged with contravening Articles 147 (assault) and 148 (insult) at the decision of Narimanov District Court of Baku on 30 January 2007 due to a lawsuit brought by the Azerbaijani Internal Minister, Ramil Usubov, and Nazim Ibrahimov, the chairman of the State Committee on Work with Azerbaijanis Residing Abroad. The Azerbaijani Appeal Court upheld the case.
