By Klavdiya Romakayeva - Trend:

Uzbekistan has attracted specialists from the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering to study the current state of the Sardoba reservoir and develop a project for its reconstruction, Trend reports referring to the Ministry of Construction of Uzbekistan.

Currently Russian experts together with representatives of the State Design Research Institute for Engineering Surveys in Construction, Geoinformatics and Urban Planning Cadastre are carrying out engineering and survey work at the facility.

"Today, the water reserve in the reservoir amounts to 230 million cubic meters of water. It is planned to increase the volume of water to 350 million cubic meters, thus reaching the last year's figure," the Minister of Water Resources of Uzbekistan Shavkat Khamroev said.

The Ministry of Construction also noted that other sections of the dam were damaged as a result of the dam break. After eliminating all the consequences, it is planned to restore the operation of the facility.

Thus, a project for the restoration of the reservoir has been developed with the participation of the designers of Hydroloyikha JSC (Hydroproject) and specialists from the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering.

It was noted that the project provides for raising the level of the dam, reconstruction of storm sewage facilities, restoration of the lower slopes of the dam, washed out by the flow of water, and a number of other measures.

After heavy rain and stormy winds on the morning of May 1, 2020, the dam of the Sardoba reservoir broke through in the Syrdarya region. As a result, thousands of homes in several regions of Uzbekistan were washed away and at least six people died. The Maktaaral district of the Turkestan region of Kazakhstan was badly damaged. Five villages were flooded. An emergency was declared. The flood led to the evacuation of 31,600 people in the area. The water washed away almost 900 houses and flooded 5,000 hectares of farmland.

It is reported that 1.2 trillion soums (about $114 million) were spent on the construction of the Sardoba reservoir, built in 2010-2017.
