The Dutch Royal Haskoning company must develop a general plan of a construction project of a new international trade port in the Alat settlement on the Caspian shore by November 2009, Head of the Azerbaijan Transport Ministry Transport Policy and Economy Department Sadraddin Mammadov said on May 8. Earlier, Royal Haskoning company won the tender to design the giant transport facility.
"At present a design process is taking place intensively. The general plan must be developed by November 2009 and designing a new port must fully finish by late 2009," Mammadov said.
Earlier, Mammadov said the Azerbaijani Transport Ministry plans to launch construction of the port in 2010.
Tenders will be announced to construct onshore and offshore sections of the new port within 6 months.
This port will be multi modules as it is planned to create free economic zone in its territory in future besides logistics center.
The new international sea port in Alat settlement will be constructed at three stages and complete by 2015. The first stage of the project covering 2008-2010 envisages construction of two ferries, three freight bridges for containers, crafts of ro-ro kind and simple (universal) dry cargos. The second stage of the project (2011-2013) envisages construction of other three freight bridges, the third one (2014-2015) - construction of two additional freight bridges. The construction project worth over $400 million.
At present there are 6 international trade ports, including Baku (Azerbaijan), Turkmenbashi (Turkmenistan), Aktua (Kazakhstan), Astrakhan (Russia), Enzeli and Neka (Iran) in the Caspian Sea.
Royal Haskoning, the engineering construction-designing company, was established in the Netherlands in 1881.
