Azerbaijan has raised 18 places in a rating of countries' competitiveness and now holds 51st place, the WEF's report on global competitiveness over 2009-2010 shows. Azerbaijan's figure for competitiveness is 4.30 compared to 4.10 in 2008.

Azerbaijan held 66th place in 2007 and the 69th in 2008.

Switzerland became the most competitive country in the world, overtaking the USA. The USA held 2nd place. Singapore, Sweden and Denmark were among the leaders. The European countries of Finland (6th), Germany (7th) and the Netherlands (10th) were among the top ten countries.

Russia went down from 51st place to 63rd in the ratings. For two years, Estonia, ranking at 35th, remains the leader in the post-Soviet sphere. Along with Azerbaijan, Lithuania (53rd), Kazakhstan (67th) and Latvia (68th) are in the second half of the rating. Tajikistan (122nd) and Kyrgyzstan (123rd) are in the bottom of the list, as they were in 2008.

The ratings are based on a combination of publicly available statistics data and poll results from companies' heads and an extensive annual survey.

This survey is conducted by the World Economic Forum in cooperation with national partners - the leading research institutes and companies specializing in competitiveness and economic development of the countries that are analyzed in the report.

The report also includes a detailed review of the strong and weak aspects of the countries' competitiveness. It identifies priority areas to formulate policies for economic development and key reforms.
