The Republican Toxicology Laboratory of the State Phytosanitary Control Service under the Agriculture Ministry plans to send its staff to regions to test the nitrate content in melons and watermelons sold in markets there, lab head Yagub Ibrahimov told Trend.

"We plan to conduct laboratory tests of melons sold in the markets in the country's large cities with high population density, for example, Ganja and Sumgayit," Ibrahimov said.

These inspections are scheduled for August in connection with the season.

"At present, we are testing the nitrate content in melons and watermelons on Baku markets. As a result of laboratory analysis, some melons were seized from the market and it was decided to destroy them," Ibrahimov said.

Raids were carried out on the wholesale market of agricultural products in n the settlement "8 kilometer", where much nitrates were revealed in melons taken from Sabirabad and Kurdamir regions. Also inspections were held on the "Taza Bazar", Nasimi markets, but control measures will be carried out in all markets in the capital, number of which exceeds 10.

Unlike melons, harmful substances were not found in watermelons, Ibrahimov said.
