Drinking water consumption in Iran is some 280 liters per day, which is twofold more than the world's average, IRIB quoted Deputy Energy Minister Alireza Daemi as saying.

"Most of country's area located in the arid and semiarid zone, besides that we have faced drought", he said, adding that average rainfall is less than 100 millimeters in main parts of Iran.

At the being time, total water volume in dam reservoirs has reached 24.500 billion cubic meters, which is acceptable, but capacity of country's water supply network and facilities are limited, Daemi said.

He underlined that fresh water's price is 4 times less than its total cost and should be increased.

According to the Iranian media, in the case of irrational use of water, supplies on the schedule will be started in large cities such as Isfahan, Bandar Abbas and Yazd.

Iran is located in the arid zone and over the past 40 years the country has repeatedly faced drought.

The drought of 1992-2002 caused considerable damage to agriculture. Quotas for fresh water were applied in some cities including Tehran.
