Turkey: Cashless payments by foreign tourists up by over 70%

In June-September 2017, foreign tourists spent 10.9 billion liras in cashless payments in Turkey, which is 72 percent more than in the same period of 2016, Turkey's Ministry of Finance told Trend.

The ministry noted that 49 percent of cashless payments accounted for Istanbul.

“Mainly, foreign tourists paid for air tickets, textile goods and booking of rooms in hotels using cards.”

“Twenty-one percent of card payments were made by tourists when buying air tickets through various air companies, 18 percent of non-cash payments accounted for the booking of rooms in hotels, 14 percent accounted for the purchase of textile products, and the remaining 47 percent accounted for other sectors,” the ministry said.

In 1H17, Turkey was visited by 12.25 million foreigners, which is 14.05 percent more than in January-June 2016.
