The work is nearing completion at the 2nd terminal of Iran’s Shahid Rajaee port, and at the same time activities for restoration of the 3rd terminal of this port have started, Mohammad Rastad, the Managing Director of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization said in an interview with the Young Journalists Club (YJC) website.

"Some 12 units of gantry cranes have been purchased for 100 million euros. Also 15 units of RTG cranes have been purchased for the financial resources amounting to 21 million euros. This terminal will proceed to full functioning after commissioning of the equipment," Rastad said.

He went on to add that the third terminal is being built at Shahid Rajaee port in order to increase the container handling capacity of the country and in particular, the capacity of this port.

The construction work has started in the beginning of the current year (starting on March 21, 2018). Some 8.64 trillion Iranian rials (approximately over $204 million) have been invested in this port.

On average, the same amount of investments will also be made into this port through the private sector.

"After completion of infrastructure work at Shahid Rajai port, the annual container handling capacity of this port will increase to 8 million TEU, and the port will turn into a freight forwarding hub in the near future," Rastad said.
