Port of Baku significantly increases cargo transshipment

Baku International Sea Trade Port in Alat settlement of Baku, Azerbaijan has increase the total volume of cargo transshipment by 7.1 percent in the first nine months of 2019, as compared to the same period of 2018, Trend reports citing Baku International Sea Trade Port closed joint-stock company (CJSC).

During the reporting period, the port transshipped a total of 3,002,500 tons of cargo and marked a significant increased in all the services provided.

Around 85.3 percent, or 2,560,300 tons of the total volume of cargo transportation via the port accounted for transit cargo.

The number of multi-tonnage vehicles using the Port of Baku increased by 64 percent during from January thorugh September compared with the same period last year and stood at 24,790, of which 18,642 or 75.2 percent were moving on Baku-Turkmenbashi-Baku route, while 6,148 or 24.8 percent accounted for Baku-Kuryk-Baku.

The Port of Baku recorded 43.5 percent increase in transshipment via containers. As such, 24,305 containers in TEU equivalent were registered in the first nine months of 2019, compared with 16,940 TEU in the same period of 2018. The number of containers from China rose by 90 percent and stood at 2,610.

Transshipment via wagons increased by 12 percent and reached 35,510 in the first nine months of 2019, compared with 31,688 in the same period of 2018. As many as 16,039 wagons or 45.2 percent were moving on Baku-Kuryk-Baku route, while 19,429 or 54.7 percent and 42 wagons or 0.1 percent accounted for Baku-Turkmenbashi-Baku and Baku-Aktau-Baku route, respectively.

During the reporting period, 34,425 passengers used Baku Port’s services.

Baku Port is a transportation hub linking the west (Turkey and EU), east (Central and East Asia), south (Iran and India) and north (Russia). In addition, new port location is linked to existing highways and railways connecting the port to the inland regions of the country. There are three international railway routes into Azerbaijan, which all converge at Alat.
