By the end of this Iranian year (March 21, 2020), a project related to transition of existing motorcycles operating on gasoline to electric engines, as well as production of new electric motorcycles in Iran will be implemented, Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian told reporters in Hamadan city, Trend reports referring to the ministry’s website.

The move comes as the Iranian government is considering a series of projects to reduce air pollution in its capital, Tehran.

Ardakanian said that this project to be implemented by the Iranian Ministry of Energy and state agencies will result in the reduction of environmental pollutants, adding that Iran has developed a cooperation project with motorcycle manufacturers.

“The Ministry of Energy will set up stations for the supply of electricity to electric motorcycles,” the minister noted.

Ardakanian said that the economic side of the project was also considered, noting that it will be beneficial for the owners of these vehicles.

There are about 12 million motorcycles in Iran, and about 2 million of them are in Tehran city.
