Smartphones import to Georgia increases

Mobile phone trade is one of the most important parts of the Georgian economy, Trend reports citing data from the Georgian National Statistical Service (Geostat).

Smartphones are among the ten largest imported goods of Georgia every year. Moreover, in 2019, $211 million was spent on the import of mobile phones, which is two times more than the import of wheat, and 2.7 times more than the import of electricity in the same year.

In the first two months of 2020, smartphone imports to Georgia increased by 33 percent year-on-year and amounted to $33.5 million. General statistics for 2019 show that Georgia buys most of its smartphones from one of the global centers for wholesale mobile sales - the UAE. Hong Kong, one of the centers of global production of mobile phones, is also among the leaders in importing smartphones into Georgia.

Mobile phones to Georgia in the first two months of 2020 were exported by the United Arab Emirates in the amount of $98.6 million; by Russia - $30.5 million; Hong Kong - $24.1 million; Czech Republic - $20.1 million; China - $10.1 million; the Netherlands - $7.5 million; Sweden - $2 million; Great Britain - $1.9 million; the US - $1.9 million; Germany - $1.8 million; Switzerland - $1.7 million and France - $1.6 million.

The rating includes countries, from which the imports exceeded $1 million.
