By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Hazelnut exports from Georgia have been going on smoothly in the first quarter of 2020, said Levan Kardava, Executive Director of Hazelnut Processors and Exporters Association of Georgia, Trend reports via Georgian media.

He pointed out that the hazelnut season is coming to an end, nevertheless, the demand on the international market has increased from January through March 2020.

Kardava noted that European countries' demand for Georgian hazelnuts is rising, since the hazelnut harvest is on decline in these countries.

Georgia primarily exports hazelnuts to Germany, Italy, France and Poland, he said.

Kardava went on to add that hazelnut export from Georgia to Turkey increased by 30 percent in March 2020, comparing to March of the previous year.

As he noted, the price on the international market has increased, which has an impact on the price of Georgian hazelnuts as well.

"The price of hazelnuts has risen by about $1 in the last month on the global market. Of course, it affects the Georgian market. The export price of the highest quality hazelnuts has increased from 8 lari ($2.50) last year to 9 lari ($2.81) this year," Kardava concluded.
