Share of population under absolute poverty line slightly decreases in Georgia

About 19.5 percent of Georgia’s population live under the absolute poverty line, Trend reports referring to the latest data of 2019 poverty indicators published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

The share of the population under the absolute poverty line decreased by 0.6 percent in 2019 compared to 2018.

Most people under the absolute poverty line live in the country’s rural areas.

Geostat said that the share of the population under the absolute poverty line is 23.7 percent in rural Georgia and 16.4 percent in urban areas.

Meanwhile, the average monthly income of a household in Georgia was 1,175.3 lari ($368.2) in 2019, while it amounted to 336.1 lari ($105.3) per capita, said Geostat.
