Kazakhstan reports increase in number of operated plastic cards

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 30

The number of plastic cards in circulation amounted to 53.6 million cards as of June 1, 2021, in Kazakhstan, which is 38.3 percent more than as of June 1, 2020 (38.8 million cards), Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s National Bank.

Of the total number of cards in circulation, 39.2 million cards were debit cards, 12.9 million cards were credit cards, and 1.4 million were other types of cards.

Furthermore, of the total number of cards in circulation, 25.6 million were used as of June 1, 2021, compared to 21.2 million cards last year, which indicates a 20.7 percent increase year-on-year.

The largest number of debit cards in circulation was registered in Almaty city (11.78 million cards). Almaty city is followed by Nur-Sultan city (3.4 million cards) and Shymkent city (2.3 million cards).

In turn, the greatest number of credit cards also was registered in Almaty city (3.8 million cards), which is followed by Shymkent (1.2 million cards) and Nur-Sultan city (1.1 million cards).

The total number of payment systems operating in Kazakhstan is 17, including those of the National Bank, systems of money transfers, and systems of plastic cards.
