By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

Iran can currently export 2,000-5,000 tons of hybrid corn seeds to neighboring countries, Deputy Director of Seed and Plant Certification and Registration Institute of Iran Samad Mobasser said, Trend reports citing Ministry of Agriculture Jihad of Iran.

Explaining why Iran is able to handle such exports, Mobasser said it is because the cost of seed production in the Islamic Republic is lower than in neighboring countries.

The deputy added that 200 tons of hybrid corn seeds have been exported to Iraq, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2020) to date.

“Iran plans to harvest 8,000-10,000 tons of hybrid corn seeds in the current Iranian year (from March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022). So, it is planned to use 000 hectares of land for planting fifteen types of hybrid corn seeds on this area,” he said.

Mobasser emphasized that hybrid corn seeds were planted on 5,460 hectares of land in Iran over the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021). About 18,200 tons of seeds were harvested.

The deputy director noted that hybrid corn seeds are grown in Ardabil, Alborz, Central, Qazvin, Kermanshah, Razavi Khorasan and Khuzestan provinces of Iran. About 80 percent of these areas are in Ardabil Province, and 20 percent in other provinces.
