TEHRAN, Iran, Aug. 25
Trend:
Saffron cultivation in Iran has increased, head of Saffron Association in Khorasan Razavi Province Gholamreza Miri told Trend in an interview.
"Saffron cultivation has increased in the provinces during recent years, which includes Khorasan Razavi Province, which is known as 'the capital' of saffron production in Iran," he said.
He pointed out that some regions of Iran, which previously were not known for their saffron production, have increased production, including Isfahan and Kashan provinces.
"There are currently 23 provinces that are producing saffron. North Khorasan Province did not produce saffron at all until five years ago, but now it has turned to a saffron production hub and it has been annually producing more than 60 tons of saffron," said Miri.
"It is true that cultivation has increased, but it will not affect the production volume in the current Iranian year (started March 21,2021). Meanwhile, it would be felt in the next Iranian year (starts March 21,2022), the official noted.
Some of Iran's exported saffron is being re-branded and re-packaged, with further being sold as Spanish, Afghan, Italian saffron.
