Iran's handmade carpet production declines

TEHRAN, Iran, Jan.24

Iran's handmade carpet export is declining, and this will reduce production in the future, head of Iran Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association Ahmad Reza Karimi said, Trend reports citing IRNA.

"Iran's current handmade carpet export is less than zero percent and it requires government support," he said.

He pointed out that high-quality silk which is an important material in waving carpets, has been banned for import by Iran's government.

"Import tariffs increased by 26 percent based on the pretext of supporting domestic silk production will damage the carpet industry," he said. "Two million weavers and workers at the domestic silk factories aren't able to solely supply the carpet producers."

Iran's handmade carpet export had a 14 percent increase in the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2021) despite the coronavirus outbreak, compared to the last Iranian year(started March 20, 2020).
