K.Ramazanova / The project of resolution of the UN General Assembly 'Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative' (EITI) was distributed in the New-York headquarters of the organization as an official document at the initiative of Azerbaijan. Sixteen countries including Germany, Georgia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Nigeria, Britain and France are co-authors of the resolution.
The initiative to provide transparency in the extractive industry is directed on the improvement of the state management of oil, gas and production of mineral resource industry sales. The resolution envisages responsibility for publishing information about payments from private and state corporations to the treasury.
The project stated that one of the priority directions for the participants of the initiative is to struggle against corruption. The project authors proposed to the Assembly to back the joint efforts of States to increase transparency and accountability in the extractive industry. The Resolution calls on UN members to ratify the UN Convention against corruption.
In December, a briefing dedicated to provide transparency in extractive spheres was held at UN headquarters at the initiative of the Azerbaijani permanent representative in the organization. The initiative was demonstrated by the Azerbaijani State Oil Fund. The fund revenues are spent for the publics benefit. In 2007, the fund was awarded with the UN premium for investments in the development of state services. The fund was the first state agency in Eastern Europe and CIS countries that was awarded this title.
