Turkmen, Afghan Presidents to discuss TAPI gas pipeline project in New York

The Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov and the Afghan President Hamid Karzai will meet in New York (USA) in September, to discuss the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project, the Turkmen Government said.

The Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov and the Afghan President Hamid Karzai will meet in New York (USA) in September, to discuss the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project, the Turkmen Government said.

The agreement was reached during a telephone conversation. The meeting will take place within the presidents' participation at the UN General Assembly's 65th session.

"The two sides agreed to meet next month in New York ... and discuss in detail the issues of implementation, construction of the transnational gas pipeline Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India, designed to serve as the economic prosperity of the member countries of this large-scale project and the whole region," the Turkmen Government said .

According to the Turkmen Government Berdimuhammadov invited his Afghan counterpart to visit Turkmenistan at any convenient time. The invitation was accepted with gratitude. Date of the visit will be agreed through diplomatic channels.

The sides "reaffirmed the mutual willingness for further intensification of multi-aspect cooperation, actively developing in the last few years on a bilateral and multilateral basis."

It was confirmed that Aug.29 Kabul will host a meeting of the intergovernmental Turkmen-Afghani commission for trade-economic and technical cooperation.

"Our country is interested in sustainable development in neighboring Afghanistan, which will be further provided with full support in strengthening the foundations of a peaceful life and economic prosperity," Berdimuhammadov said.
