Over seven years, more than 2150 oil tankers have been shipped from the Ceyhan terminal, Anadolu agency quotes BP Vice-President on Turkey, Hakan Türker as saying on Wednesday.

According to Türker, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline is a very important project for Turkey and it may arouse interest of the Central Asian states.

"This project is important for Turkey for several reasons. One of them is that such a global pipeline passes through Turkey," he said.

Türker said that every day one per cent of all oil produced in the world is transported via the BTC pipeline. "The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline has become a stimulus for other projects," he said.

The BТС's total length is 1768 kilometres including a 443-kilometre section running via Azerbaijan, a 249-kilometre section traversing Georgia and a 1076-kilometre section passing through Turkey. The pipeline's construction began in April 2003. The first oil was marketed on May 18, 2005.

The shareholders of BTC are BP (30.1 per cent), AzBTC (25 per cent), Chevron (8.90 per cent), Statoil (8.71 per cent), TRAO (6.53 per cent), Eni (5 per cent), Total (5 per cent), Itochu (3.40 per cent), Inpex (2.50 per cent), ConocoPhilips (2.50 per cent) and Hess (2.36 per cent).
