By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

In the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario of the International Energy Agency (IEA), transport sector energy consumption falls by 3 percent and emissions by 20 percent by 2030, Trend reports with reference to the IEA.

This occurs as oil’s share of transport demand falls to around 80 percent by 2030, due to an increase in efficiency across transport modes, including widespread electrification, as well as behavioural changes, according to the IEA report.

The report shows that the transport sector accounted for 25 percent of total final energy consumption in 2020, with emissions down 10 percent at just over 7 Gt CO2, compared with 2019 levels, before the Covid-19 pandemic. Oil comprises 90 percent of transport energy demand. Road transport makes up about 75 percent of transport demand and emissions.

“The different transport modes do not decarbonize at the same rate because technology maturity varies markedly between them. CO2 emissions from two- and three‐wheelers almost cease by 2040, followed by cars and vans (light-duty vehicles) and rail in the late 2040s. Emissions from heavy trucks, shipping and aviation fall by an annual average of 6 percent between 2020 and 2050 and collectively amount to about 0.5 Gt CO2 in 2050.

Even in the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario 80 percent of passenger car stock remains conventionally powered by 2030, underscoring the importance of continuing to improve fuel efficiency of internal combustion engine vehicles. Nearly 90 percent of new light-duty and 80 percent of new heavy-duty vehicles sales are currently covered by fuel economy standards, though under the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario they become more stringent, helping facilitate the shift to electric vehicles,” said the IEA.
