Central Bank of Azerbaijan records increase in total liabilities of banks

The total liabilities of Azerbaijani banks from January through August 2021 increased by 8.6 percent, or 2.2 billion manat ($1.2 billion), compared to the same period of 2020 – from 26.3 billion ($15.4 billion) to 28.6 billion manat ($16.8 billion), Trend reports via Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA).

According to the CBA report, in the structure of liabilities, the majority (79.5 percent) fell on deposits (with the exception of deposits of financial institutions), which increased by 16.2 percent over the year – from 19.5 billion ($11.4 billion) to 22.7 billion manat ($13.3 billion).

A significant part (63.1 percent) fell on deposits of legal entities in the amount of 14.3 billion manat ($8.4 billion), compared to 11.8 billion manat ($6.9 billion) in 2020 (an increase of 21.5 percent), of which 12.12 billion manats were demand deposits.

Retail deposits increased by 8.2 percent year-on-year – from 7.7 billion ($4.5 billion) to 8.4 billion manat ($4.9 billion), of which 61.5 percent or 5.1 billion ($3 billion) were time deposits.

Deposits of financial institutions decreased by 10.2 percent over the year – to 1.06 billion manat ($623.5 million), compared to 1.1 billion manat ($647 million) in 2020.

Bank liabilities to the Central Bank of Azerbaijan decreased by 2.9 percent, or 11.1 million manat ($6.5 million), year-on-year – from 382 million ($224.7 million) to 370.9 million manat ($218.1).

Over the reporting period, LORO correspondent accounts decreased by 28 million manat ($16.4 million), or 12.7 percent, from 221.3 million ($130.1 million) to 193.3 million manat ($113.7 million).

Bank and other financial institutions’ loans increased by 10.2 percent over the year and reached 2.3 billion manat ($1.3 billion), compared to 2 billion manat ($1.1 billion) in 2020. The issued securities of the banks amounted to 3.1 percent, or 876 million manat ($515.2 million) of the total amount of liabilities, and other liabilities – 3.7 percent, or 1.06 billion manat ($623.5 million).

The total bank capital from January through August 2021 increased by 2.1 percent year-on-year – from 4.7 billion ($2.7 billion) to 4.8 billion manat ($2.8 billion). The bank equity capital reached 4.4 billion manat ($2.5 billion), and capital reserves – 332.8 million manat ($195.7 million).
