BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 27. The EU has approved a law introducing restrictions on methane emissions when importing oil, gas, and coal to Europe from 2030, Trend reports.

“Europe's oil, gas, and coal importers must disclose methane emissions from 2025, and European companies must limit methane emissions from 2030. Companies (consortia) in the supply chain must measure, monitor, and report methane emissions from 2030,” the materials of the European Commission note.

According to the EC decision, from January 2027, new contracts for oil, gas, and coal imports can only be concluded if exporters apply the same monitoring, reporting, and emissions verification obligations as EU producers.

“The EC will set a ‘ceiling’ on methane emission values at a later date. Those who breach the limit could face fines. The details are being worked out,” the information said.

To note, the new measures on methane emissions will directly affect Azerbaijan, which is an active supplier of hydrocarbons to the EU.

Azerbaijan has joined the international initiatives on step-by-step reduction of methane emissions with an expected Net Zero emissions in 2050.
