BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 30. Iran saw a 99.4 percent growth in monthly cargo transit through its roads and railroads in the 9th month of the current Iranian year (November 22 through December 21, 2023), compared to the same month of the previous year, Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Shahriar Afandizadeh said, Trend reports.
According to him, a total of 1.6 million tons of cargo were transited via Iran’s roads and railways in the ninth month.
“So, 1.44 million tons of cargo were transited through the country's roads during the reporting period. Of that, 560,000 tons accounted for crude oil and petroleum products, while around 880,000 tons accounted for non-oil products,” Afandizadeh added.
The deputy minister also mentioned that 167,000 tons of cargo (including both oil and non-oil goods) were transited through Iran's railways over the ninth month.
He also pointed out that since the current government took office in Iran in August 2021, many steps have been taken to increase cargo transit through the country. It is hoped that cargo transit through Iran will increase continuously in the coming years.
Currently, there are 2,793 km of controlled-access highways, 45,170 km of highways, and freeways in operation in Iran.
The length of railway lines in Iran is currently 14,984 kilometers. At present, 978 locomotives, 29,305 freight wagons, and 2,153 passenger wagons are in operation on Iran's railways.
