The activities of seven terrorist groups have been crushed in Kazakhstan this year, the country's Interior Minister Kalmukhambet Kasymov said addressing the "government hour" at the Majilis (lower chamber of parliament) with a report 'On the state of law and order and the basic direction of interior bodies' activity'.

"Some 23 criminal cases have recently been filed in Kazakhstan on crimes of an extremist nature. Activity of seven terrorist groups in Aktobe, West Kazakhstan and Atyrau oblasts have been suppressed where 18 participants were arrested and brought to justice," Kasymov said.

He said the country fights against extremism and terrorism in close cooperation with the national security bodies.

Kasymov recalled that responsibility of those who lead organised crime groups and involve minors has been tightened. The country criminalised funding and involvement of civil servants for the first time.

"Now those condemned members of organised crime groups are not subject to parole," he said.
