Kazakh Parliament to consider several bills on Caspian Sea

Kazakh Mazhilis [Parliament’s Lower Chamber] will consider the bill on ratification of the protocol on protecting the Caspian Sea against pollution from land-based sources and activities to framework convention for protecting the Caspian Sea’s marine environment, Trend reports on Sept.24 citing Kazinform via the Mazhilis’ press service.

The bill was included in the draft agenda for the upcoming plenary session of MPs at the Mazhilis Bureau meeting held under the chairmanship of Nurlan Nigmatulin.

It’s aimed at using the best available technologies and environmental practices, gaining access to them, and transferring them during economic activities in the water area or coastal zone of ​​the Caspian Sea.

The bill also envisages regular assessment of the state of the marine environment and coastal areas of the Caspian Sea, as well as the level of sea pollution along its coastline.

Besides, the draft agenda has included consideration of the bill on ratifying protocol on conservation of biological diversity to the forenamed framework convention.

The objectives of the protocol are to protect, preserve and restore the viability and integrity of the biological diversity and ecosystem of the Caspian Sea. Accession to the protocol determines the need to promote multilateral cooperation between states in the implementation of quick and effective measures to protect the marine environment of the mentioned sea.
