Kyrgyzstan reveals plans for winter 2023–2024 electricity imports

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, September 21. The Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan plans to purchase 3.8 billion kWh in the winter of 2023-2024, Trend reports.

Out of this, Turkmenistan will supply 1.6 billion kWh, Kazakhstan 1.5 billion kWh, Russia 400 million kWh, and Uzbekistan 250 million kWh.

During that period, electricity consumption in Kyrgyzstan is expected to reach 17.4 billion kWh, while the deficit will be 3.2 billion kWh.

According to the Minister of Energy of Kyrgyzstan, Taalaybek Ibraev, the country is currently actively stocking coal and transitioning consumers to natural gas heating. He said that 390,000 citizens have been connected to natural gas heating. Repair work has been carried out on all hydroelectric power stations. Also, there are plans to commission the second unit of the Toktogul Hydroelectric Power Station by November and to increase the capacity of major transformer substations.

Electricity consumption in Kyrgyzstan amounted to 16.1 billion kilowatt-hours in 2022. Overall, the energy enterprises in Kyrgyzstan produced 13.9 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity last year, which is 8.3 percent less than in 2021.

Kyrgyzstan exported 550 million kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2022, which is 0.7 percent more than in 2021.
