An organizational meeting of the newly elected Majlis (Parliament) will be held on January 7, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at the governmental meeting in Ashgabat, the Turkmen government reported on Jan.4.

"The first meeting of the fifth convocation of the Turkmen Mejlis is scheduled for January 7. During the meeting organizational decisions will be made, parliament leaders and chairmen of committees will be elected," the head of state said, according to the statement.

Many proposals have been received on the new composition of the Turkmen Parliament concerning, in particular, increasing the number of committees.

The statement said that the proposals on establishing the Committee on Economic Affairs and the Committee on Social Policy were supported.

In addition, the need for establishment of a separate committee on local self-government was emphasized.

The current head of the parliament Akja Nurberdieva has held this position since February 2007.

Election of deputies of the fifth convocation of Turkmen Majlis were held on December 15, 2013 and 125 deputies were elected out of 283 candidates.

First time in the history of Turkmenistan the representatives of the two parties (the Democratic Party and Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs) took part in the elections.

According to the CEC, the number of voters was 91.33 per cent of all Turkmen citizens eligible to vote.
