OSCE and Uzbekistan discuss cooperation prospects

The leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan and the Secretary General of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Lamberto Zannier, who is on a visit to Tashkent, discussed the state and prospects of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the OSCE on Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry press service reported.

The leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan and the Secretary General of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Lamberto Zannier, who is on a visit to Tashkent, discussed the state and prospects of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the OSCE on Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry press service reported.

"Regional issues, countering of transnational threats as well as other topics of mutual interest were discussed during the meeting," the press service said.

It was noted that the parties give priority to practical cooperation within jointly implemented annual projects aimed at technical assistance to Uzbekistan agencies in strengthening their capacity in various fields. Both sides also exchanged views on further development and reform of the OSCE.

Reportedly the programme of the visit includes meetings of the OSCE Secretary General and negotiations at the Oly Majlis (parliament), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the number of other ministries and departments.

Uzbekistan has been a member of OSCE since 1992. In 1994, the Mission of Uzbekistan to the OSCE in Vienna started functioning. The OSCE Office for Relations with Central Asia was opened in Tashkent in 1995 on the initiative of the Uzbek side. In 1999, in connection with the opening of the OSCE representative offices in Central Asian countries and Kazakhstan, the office for relations with Central Asian countries was renamed the OSCE Centre in Tashkent.

In July 2006, the government of Uzbekistan and the OSCE signed a memorandum on the establishment of the position of OSCE project coordinator in Uzbekistan. At present, a total of 30 OSCE projects are being implemented in Uzbekistan.
