Uzbekistan’s foreign trade turnover down in 11M2020

The foreign trade turnover of Uzbekistan from January through November 2020 reached $32.9 million, which is lower by $4.9 million compared to the same period last year, Trend reports referring to the State Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan.

According to the committee, exports amounted to $14.2 million (a decrease of 10.5 percent) from the total volume of foreign trade turnover, while imports amounted to $18.8 million (a decrease of 14.7 percent). Accordingly, the foreign trade balance amounted to a passive balance in the amount of $4.6 million.

To date, Uzbekistan carries out trade relations with more than 160 countries of the world. The largest volume of foreign trade turnover was recorded with China (17.4 percent), Russia (15.4 percent), Kazakhstan (7.9 percent), South Korea (5.8 percent), Turkey (5.7 percent), Kyrgyzstan (2.5 percent), and Germany (2.2 percent).

There is also an active foreign trade balance with four countries among the 20 large partner countries in foreign economic activity, in particular with such countries as Afghanistan ($692 million), Kyrgyzstan ($555 million), Tajikistan ($277 million), and Iran ($34 million). The passive balance of foreign trade turnover remains with the remaining 16 countries.

It was noted that one-third of the turnover falls on the CIS countries and, in recent years, this indicator has changed slightly.

The total number of exporters for 11M2020 amounted to 5,835, and this ensured the increase in the volume of exports without taking into account special exports to $8.3 million, decreasing by 26.5 percent compared to the same period in 2019.

In the structure of exports, 87.2 percent are goods, which are mainly industrial products (18.3 percent), food products and live animals (8.6 percent), chemicals, and similar products (5.2 percent).

The fastest-growing export for the reported period was the export of various finished products, machinery and transport equipment, industrial goods, as well as drinks and tobacco to the CIS countries. A decrease was primarily noted in the export of mineral fuels, chemicals, food products, animal and vegetable oils.

An analysis of the dynamics of imports of goods also showed that the volume of imports of goods for 9M2020 decreased by $2 million compared to the same period in 2019, amounting to $17.7 million. At the same time, imports of services reached $1.041 million.

Analysis of the structure of imported goods and services for 11M2020 also showed that, compared to the same period in 2019, the share of imports of industrial goods increased from 17.1 percent to 17.2 percent, machinery, and transport equipment decreased from 39.7 percent up to 37.6 percent, non-food raw materials - from 4.4 percent to 4.1 percent, respectively.

In general, goods and services from January through November 2020 were imported to Uzbekistan from 145 countries.

It was noted that countries such as the Netherlands, Kyrgyzstan, France, and Poland are among the top twenty imports to Uzbekistan.

A third of imports ($13.5 million) is accounted for by such large partner countries as China (the share in total imports amounted to 21.2 percent), Russia (20 percent), South Korea (9.9 percent), Kazakhstan (9.6 percent), Turkey (5.2 percent), Germany (3.5 percent) and Czech Republic (2.6 percent).
