Azerbaijan, Baku, May 6 / Trend /

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has made a statement in connection with the continuing developments in Syria, the Iranian Mehr news agency reported.

The statement said the confrontation between the Syrian government and the Israeli people over the past 60 years has played a direct role and influenced the revival of the Arab peoples and the protection of the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples' rights.

"The vigilance of the Syrian people and state has dealt blows to the insidious policy of the United States and the Zionists," the statement says. "The Syrian leadership is trying to hold reforms for its national interests. The Islamic Republic of Iran hopes that thanks to the reform program, the Syrian leadership and people will better play its historic role between the Arab and Islamic nations. There has been friendship between Iran and Syria for already 32 years. This friendship also exists between the two Muslim peoples of both countries along with the friendship between states, and they always support each other in the fight against the Zionist regime and the US aggressive policy supporting it. We advise the U.S. politicians to properly assess ongoing events in the region and not to make new mistakes made by them throughout history by supporting the Zionist regime."

Anti-government riots in Syria began in Deraa on March 25. Hundreds of people were killed during clashes with police over one week.

Later, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad accepted the government's resignation.
Two weeks after the riots began in Deraa, the Syrian leadership announced about plan of urgent policy reforms. The plan also envisages transferring to a multiparty system, adopting a new law on media outlets, carrying out judicial reforms, as well as strengthening the fight against corruption, which causes citizens' dissatisfaction.

Two days ago, the government started withdrawing troops from Deraa.

Public riots continue in Syria.
