Afghanistan's demand for more of Iran's steady supply of electricity has led the Islamic Republic to pursue changes in its current contract with Kabul.

While Afghanistan has a contract for 90 megawatts of electricity from Iran, it is getting more electricity than that, Abdul Hamid Farzam Behboudi, told the Iranian Students' News Agency.

Mr. Behboudi, who heads the Iran Grid Management Company's Office of Trade and Cross Border Transactions, said Afghanistan is asking Iran for more electricity regularly. The official credited Iran's stable flow of power with helping to develop the Afghan provinces of Herat and Nimruz.

Although Iran signs annual contracts to supply power, Afghanistan's demand for electricity has been greater than what has been stipulated in the two neighbors' agreements.

In addition to Afghanistan, the Islamic Republic trades or exports electricity with Armenia, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Armenia, Turkmenistan.
