Informed sources say the voter turnout in Iran's 11th presidential election has been around 80 percent, Press TV reported.

Meanwhile, Officials at the Election Headquarters of the Iranian Interior Ministry announced on Saturday that 8,319,768 have been counted at 14,603 polling stations (out of 58,764 stations).

Candidate Hassan Rohani is in the lead, according to the results so far, with Principlist candidate Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf coming in second.

Thus far Hassan Rouhani continues to lead the race with 4,125,032 votes.

He is followed by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf (1,341,947), Saeed Jalili (1,056,327), Mohsen Rezaee (902,121), Ali Akbar Velayati (521,097), and Mohammad Gharazi (104,214).

The 11th presidential elections have officially started yesterday in Iran. Over 50 million Iranians were eligible to take part in Friday's polls.

Due to high amount of people willing to leave their votes for the candidates, the time of the elections was extended several times, before the final closure of the polls.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election. The Guardian Council has vetted the candidates for qualifications.

If a candidate wins over 50 percent of the vote in the first round, he will replace incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Otherwise, a run-off will be held in a week's time to determine a final winner in the race.

On Friday, millions of Iranian voters headed for polling stations to cast their ballots and choose the country's 11th president as well as their representatives in the City and Village Councils.

Nearly 50.5 million Iranians, including more than 1.6 million first-time voters, were eligible to vote in the June 14 elections.
