Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has ordered to eliminate the fuel cards from the country’s fuel distribution system.

The Parliament had authorized the government to dismiss the cards and now the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company, government spokesman Mohammad Baqer Nobakht said, SHANA news agency reported October 4.

The fuel cards were introduced during the administration of Mahmud Ahmadinejad in 2007.

The plan was to restrict access to subsidized fuel to prevent its smuggling out of the country.

The government plans to liberalize fuel prices in the long run. Gasoline is distributed in Iran under a ration of 60 liters per month at 10,000 rials (about 30 cents). Any liter of gasoline beyond the ration will cost 15,000 rials.
