The managing director of Tehran refinery said the factory has signed agreements with two Japanese corporations to enhance the quality of its gasoline.

Tehran refinery has inked two memoranda of understanding with the Japanese corporations of JGC and Marubeni to improve the quality of its gasoline and cut down its use of fuel oil, Lotfollah Hangi said, according to a statement released by Iran’s Oil Ministry on Saturday.

“With the implementation of the first part of the agreements, Tehran refinery’s gasoline output will increase by 24 percent,” he said.

According to the terms of the deals, the two Japanese corporations will build gasoline-processing units at the refinery to delete Benzene, adopt tougher quality standards for gasoline and finally produce Euro-5 quality gasoline, Hangi further said.

The project will be completed within three years, he said.

Gasoline production turned into Iran’s strategic vulnerability after the West started imposing sanctions on the country in 2012.

The country’s total production of gasoline, as announced by the NIORDC (the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company), stood at 74.4 ml/d on average, around 8 percent higher than a similar period in 2016.

Production of normal gasoline also saw a rise of 4 percent, reaching as high as 48.7 ml/d.

The bulk of Iran’s gasoline production came from Shazand with 15 m/d. Other top producers were Abadan and Isfahan refineries with a similar production capacity of 11 ml/d.

The NIORDC further in its statement said the production of gasoline from the newly inaugurated Persian Gulf Star Refinery stood at 3.5 ml/d, adding that this could rise to as high as 12 ml/d within the next few weeks.
