Baku, Azerbaijan, May 21

Trend:

Iran is preparing to hold international tender for development of Shourijeh gas storage facilities in north eastern, Razavi Khorasan province, Iran Gas Engineering and Development Company's head Hassan Montazer Torbati said.

The development projects aims to increase the storage capacity to more than 4.5 billion cubic meters, Montazer Torbati said, SHANA news agency reported May 21.

The development project will be carried out within the framework of a build-operate-transfer (BOT) investment contract, he said.

The gas storage facility’s current capacity stands at 2 billion cubic meters.

He added that some 10 percent of the country’s annual gas consumption must be stored in reservoirs, so establishing new gas storage facilities is a priority.

Iran has two gas storage facilities, Serajeh(in Qom province) and Shourijeh, with a capacity to store 4-5 billion cubic meters of gas.

The natural gas stored in Sarajeh facility mainly is used to meet gas demand of Tehran in the cold season, meanwhile Shourijeh supplies gas to north eastern provinces of the country.

The country extracted 13 mcm/d of gas from Shourijeh and 8 mcm/d from Sarajeh facility during the peak consumption days of the cold season in the current year.

Montazer Torbati said that on average, Iran injects gas into the Shourijeh and Sarajeh facilities within the first 8 months of a fiscal year. Further, gas is extracted from the facilities during the remaining four months.

National Iranian Gas Company plans to establish five new gas storage facilities with the goal of boosting the country's gas storage capacity.

Currently, the Nasrabad and the Yurtsha gas storage facility projects are underway, and the Qezeltappeh project is also on the agenda.
