Iran battles water shortage in Khuzestan Province as protests increase

TEHRAN, Iran, July 24

Trend:

Irans President Hassan Rouhani said that water shortage in Khuzestan Province in Iran surfaced because the government isn't able to release enough water from the local dams, Trend reports via IRNA.

Rouhani explained that the water isn't being released because 'people may run out of water by the end of September and early October'.

“The biggest decrease in the volume of water stored behind the dams is related to September and October,” President Rouhani said.

He went on to say that the water inflows to the dams have decreased over the last 50 years and even decreased by 50 percent compared to last year.

The president pointed out that the water shortage has led to problems for the operation of hydropower plants and the heat has affected the increase in electricity consumption

The president stated that 295,000 hectares in Khuzestan and a small part in Ilam Province have been drained in last few years.

Despite all the efforts made, he says that the problems in Khuzestan Province are not yet fully dealt with.

For the past week, demonstrators have surged into the streets of Khuzestan Province in the southwest, the epicenter of the protests.
