BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 8. The volume of dates grown in Iran increased by 4 percent in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2023, through March 19, 2024) compared to the previous year (from March 21, 2022, through March 20, 2023), a spokesman for Iran's Ministry of Agriculture Zahra Jalili Moqaddam said in Trend reports.
According to her, about 1.66 million tons of dates were grown in Iran last year. However, about 1.6 million tons of dates were grown in the country the previous year.
The official noted that steps are being taken in the country to create date orchards, reform orchards, eliminate old orchards, and so on. Besides, the construction of date export terminals in date regions of the country is also in focus.
Jalili Moqaddam stated that 390,000 tons of dates worth $345 million were exported from the country in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2023, through March 19, 2024). Compared to the previous year (from March 21, 2022, through March 20, 2023), date exports increased by 10 percent in terms of value and 7 percent in terms of weight.
Meanwhile, Iran ranks third in the world after Egypt and Saudi Arabia in the cultivation of dates. In terms of the cultivation of five types of dates in the country, Iran ranks first in the world in this respect.
To note, according to the statistics of Iran's Customs Administration, the country's non-oil exports last Iranian year amounted to more than 136 million tons worth $49.3 billion. Compared to the previous year, Iran's non-oil exports decreased by 8.87 percent in value terms and increased by 9.82 percent in weight terms.
