Russian FM to visit Armenia

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will pay an official visit to Armenia from June 22 to June 23, Armenia's news.am website reported citing Armenia's Foreign Ministry.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan will receive Lavrov who will hold negotiations with his Armenian counterpart, Edward Nalbandian.

The meetings will focus on the process of implementation of the agreements reached during the Russian president's visit to Armenia in December, 2013, the allied relations between the two countries, the intensification of the military cooperation, as well as the process of Armenia's accession to the Eurasian Union.

The agenda of the negotiations will include the expansion of the trade, economic and the decentralized cooperation between Armenia and Russia.

The sides will also discuss the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group in promoting the negotiations on the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
