German FM to visit Georgia today

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle will visit Tbilisi on March 15 within his tour to three South Caucasus countries, where he will discuss issues of cooperation with the EU, regional conflicts, bilateral cooperation in economy and energy and the situation in these countries in terms of protection of human rights at the meetings with these countries’ leaders, Georgian Foreign Ministry said.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle will visit Tbilisi on March 15 within his tour to three South Caucasus countries, where he will discuss issues of cooperation with the EU, regional conflicts, bilateral cooperation in economy and energy and the situation in these countries in terms of protection of human rights at the meetings with these countries' leaders, Georgian Foreign Ministry said.

Westerwelle, who will arrive in Tbilisi from Baku and later visit Yerevan, will meet with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze and former President Eduard Shevardnadze.

According to the German Embassy in Tbilisi, during the visit to Georgia, German Foreign Minister will also meet with representatives of civil society. He is also planned to make a speech at the Tbilisi State University on the relations between the EU and South Caucasus countries.

As Deputy Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze said, "this visit coincides with the 20th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Germany, and emphasizes intense relations between the two countries. We have special attitude to Germany, because it was the first state recognizing Georgia's independence. We face a number of external challenges, on which we will inform the German side about our vision, and we hope for their support," she said.
