A hand grenade was hurled Tuesday at a convoy carrying the head of the United Nations mission to Libya, causing no casualties, the Doha-based Al Jazeera television reported.

The attack targeted the convoy of UN envoy Ian Martin in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, the broadcaster said, dpa reported.

Martin, a British diplomat and human rights activist, was in September appointed by the UN to head its new mission in Libya and assist with reconstruction efforts after the war that overthrew Moamer Gaddafi.

Libyan authorities said an investigation was underway.
