EU foreign policy chief meets Lebanese prime minister
European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton was holding talks Tuesday with Lebanese Prime Minister Nagib Mikati expected to focus on rising sectarian tensions after the assassination of an intelligence chief, dpa reported.
The Lebanese anti-Syria opposition has blamed the assassination in Beirut last week of domestic intelligence chief Wissam al-Hassan on Syria.
The EU ambassador to Lebanon, Angelina Eichhorst, said Ashton will also offer the bloc's support to deal with the flow of Syrian refugees into Lebanon.
According to United Nations estimates, there are an estimated 67,000 registered Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
Ashton visited Jordan on Monday and will head to Israel after her talks in Lebanon.
