European Parliament deputy Marianne Mikko, the chairperson of the EU-Moldova Cooperation Committee, has told RFE/RL's Moldova Service that she is "confident" that the country's upcoming parliamentary elections will be fair.

Mikko says she does not expect problems because "Moldovan society is more or less democratic."

She warned, however, that the ruling Communist Party "better be careful" because European monitors will be watching the April 5 closely.

Moldovan opposition groups have complained in the past that the ruling party, lead by outgoing President Vladimir Voronin, uses state media to influence the outcome.
