The Czech Republic is to increase its troop numbers in Afghanistan, while reducing the number in Kosovo, the government announced Wednesday, dpa reported

"We recognize our duty to the (NATO) alliance," prime minister Petr Necas told the news agency CTK.

Defence Minister Alexandr Vondra had already said in September that he wanted to send an extra 200 soldiers to Afghanistan, bringing the total to 720.

Parliament, where the centre-right government has a solid majority, has still to approve the measures.

At the same time, the Czech Republic is to reduce the number of its troops in Kosovo from 270 to 90.

Neighbouring Slovakia has also announced plans to gradually withdraw from Kosovo completely by the end of November and is to double the number of its troops in Afghanistan to over 520 next year
