The militants died when an explosive device they were attempting to lay in Salah al-Din province, 170 kilometres north of the capital Baghdad, exploded prematurely, local police told dpa.

Four other explosions took place in the same area on Sunday morning without causing any casualties, sources added.

Meanwhile, in Mosul, 400 kilometres north of Baghdad, the mayor of an eastern district in the city was assassinated by unknown gunmen.

Elsewhere in Mosul, a member of the Shabak religious minority was also killed, according to police sources, while two explosions injured three other persons.
