Eurovision governing body is at the moment discussing the waving of the "flag" of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh during the Eurovision 2016 song contest, the Eurovision press service told Trend May 11.

The governing body will be issuing a statement later today, added the press service.

Earlier, Iveta Mukuchyan, representing Armenia in the Eurovision 2016, waved the "flag" of the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh during the song contest.

Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry has said this step taken by Armenia is a provocation, adding that the issue will be discussed jointly with the contest's organizing committee.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
